Superfoods Cookbook by Don Orwell

By Beatrice Peters

The Superfoods Cookbook over nearly a hundred fast, simple recipes good for gluten-free diets and low cholesterol diets.

Author, Don Orwell, wrote the book after switching to a Superfoods diet to help his vascular and thyroid problems. He claims to have found great success in regaining his health, losing weight and even helping his son’s ADHD issues.

The book focuses on not only recipes that are low cholesterol and gluten-free, but also include ingredients known as “superfoods.” Superfoods are nutrient dense foods that are thought to be particularly beneficial to regaining and maintaining health.  Examples include quinoa, blueberries, greek yogurt and many other grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

Superfoods Cookbook includes recipes for

  • Appetizers
  • Soups
  • Condiments
  • Breakfast
  • Grilled meats
  • Side dishes
  • Crockpot recipes
  • Casseroles
  • Stews
  • Stir fries

Many of the meals can prepared in about 10 minutes and each includes one or more superfoods, antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

Other claims made by the book include that it will get rid of cravings, balance hormones, boost energy, lower blood pressure, and get rid of inflammation in your body.

The digital version of the book also includes a link to a second book which is free by signing up for the site’s emails. An appendix at the end of the book also includes information about how the diet was created, disease prevention, antioxidants and aging, superfoods for certain ailments/dietary requirements, preventing binge eating, exercising and quite a bit more.

What People are Saying

-Perhaps one of the greatest assets about the book is that it was written by someone who understands what it’s like to struggle with weight. Don Orwell gives a lot of personal advice on avoiding trigger foods and binge eating that can help some. Anyone who has listened to advice about weight loss from someone who has never had to do it, knows how frustrating this can be.

-However, this not just about food. Along with the recipes and some science behind why these foods are better for you, Orwell does go into the exercise aspect of getting healthy as one reviewer noted: “The book covers the benefits of kettlebell training. The strength of kettlebell training is in forcing the body to experience wider ranges of motion to optimize stretching. This training modality is very helpful for weight loss too.

-Another, more critical review, did like the recipes that were included but felt it wasn’t really a cookbook so much as “… a personal story, with recipes added as a bonus.” The review did go on to say there was a nice mix of easy recipes and some information but it was just much heavier on the personal story part than a typical cookbook would be.

-Other reviewers also found the author’s style of writing to be “rambling” and “boring” because there was too much personal info.

-Overall, the recipes in the books are reasonably simple with quite a few salads and soups included that could, potentially, be easy to prepare ahead and in larger quantities. When getting this, be prepared for a lot of personal stories and largely, simple recipes and advice that you could find elsewhere but it is nice to have them all in one place.
